The purpose of this study was to improve the fitness of Korean-made apparel products being exported to China for the Chinese women. For this purpose, Chinese college women aged between 17 and 24 were sampled at random to be subjected to a body measurement and thereby, their characteristics were analyzed to test the fitness of the Korean-made apparels for the Chinese women sample and address the problems of unfitness, and thereupon, develop a torso prototypes fitting them tightly. The results of this study can be summarized as follows; Chinese college women were shorter than Korean counterparts, and had relatively stout arms and torso. Moreover, their body were more thick than wide. In other words, Chinese college women had thicker body and larger drop size(chest circumference - hip circumference) than their Korean counterparts, which means they had more constricted waists and larger and more voluminous breasts. Two women groups had the shoulders of similar size, but the shoulders of Chinese women is drooping more. As a result of testing the fitness of the Korean-made apparels for the Chinese women, it was found that Chinese women felt more or less comfortable for the front of the jackets, but felt less comfortable with their side and back. Such a finding suggests that the Chinese women's postures are more turned back than the Korean women's. Based on the above findings, a torso prototype was developed for the Chinese women by setting the body measurements in reference with their average body measurements plus minimum reserve. The reference lines were set for front/back central line, front/back interscye lengths, chest circumference, waist circumference, belly circumference and hip circumference. As a result of trying the prototype for the Chinese women first, it was found that such front length as chest circumference and neck height anterior, such back length as waist circumference, and such side length as chest and waist circumferences needed to be corrected. Such mismatches may well be attributable to the Chinese women′s postures turned back rather than possible erroneous measurements; since the turned-back posture tended to shorten the breast length, front interscye length and chest circumference fell short all together, while back interscye length and chest circumference were exceeded. Thus, the fitness had to be controlled again through two rounds of reworking and after all, more fitting torso prototype was developed. The torso prototype materialized through precise body measurements and drawed in a short measure method to link the upper and lower parts of the body may be characterized by tight-fitting along the body lines until hip circumference line; it seems that Chinese women′s body features are reflected well on the prototype. To be more specific, front and back central line lengths were reduced a little in consideration of Chinese women′s bodily characteristics, while neckside - nipple length was increased in consideration of their turned-back posture, and the size of shoulder dart on front was set larger. Moreover, setting a gap of measurement between "S" and "L" in addition to the basic measurement "M" tested the fitness of the prototype. As described above, Chinese women′s bodily characteristics were reviewed and thereupon, fitness of domestic apparels for the Chinese women was tested to develop a tight-fitting apparel prototype for them. It is believed, therefore, that the results of this study would be useful to Korean apparel manufacturers exporting their products to China.
