In this work, the effect of silane coupling agent-grafted magnesium hydroxide on flame retardancy and mechanical properties of thermoplastic polypropylene (PP) were investigated. The correlation between the dispersion properties and the physical properties of the PP composites was studied in terms of various silane coupling agents. Changes in surface properties of silane-grafted magnesium hydroxide were observed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. The variation of dispersion properties of magnesium hydroxide (MH) by silanegrafted was observed through a turbiscan. The flame retardant properties of the PP were analyzed by limiting oxygen index (L.O.I) and UL-94 vertical burning tests. The mechanical properties of the PP were evaluated by tensile and flexural strengths. From the FT-IR, the chemical bond (Si-O-C) of silane organic functional groups was observed on the surface of magnesium hydroxide and XPS was also confirmed the increase of elemental contents of Si and C. I.O.L values was increased, UL-94 vertical burning tests rating was resulred at V-2 to V-1. Consequently, the flame retardancy and mechanical properties of the PP composites were increased with the improvement of the dispersibility of MH which was attributed to the electrostatic repulsion and steric hindrance between the silane particles.
