Gamak Mountain stele(紺岳山碑) looks similar to Silla monument in commemoration of King Chinhŭng’s tour, which occasionally led to the argument that it was erected during the King Chinhŭng’s reign. Recently, some claimed to have read the letters, but it is a subjective judgement. The stele’s surface is so damaged that the letters cannot be identified.
The Gamak Mountain was the place for a state memorial service during the dynastic period. During the reign of King Sejong, Gamak shrine(紺岳神祠) was rebuilt at the top of the mountain. The former shrine was located further east of the mountain ridge. Shinyuhan(申維翰) vividly described this image on his writings.
Gamak Mountain stele was erected lower to the north than Gamak shrine. The present stele was moved from here when military facilities were established. Boruseong(堡壘城) walls of the Three Kingdoms Period are identified at the top of the mountain. Gamak Mountain stele was erected to be able to view Chiljoong castle(七重城) at the northwest side from the inside of Boruseong.
The Chiljoong castle was the place where Goguryeo and Silla were repeatedly taken and taken away in the middle of the seventh century. It is highly likely that Gamak Mountain Stele was erected by Silla around this time. After Goryeo Dynasty, the story that the Gamak Mountain god is Seoulingui(薛仁貴), Tang Dynasty general, was developed by cooperating with folk beliefs. However, it has never been officially acknowledged at the national level.
