The purpose of this study is to find out the difference between the inspiratory muscle capacity of the superior group with a national championship and the inferior group among male and female high school swimmers, and to analyze the correlation between the inspiratory muscle capacity and the swimming performance. The subjects of the experiment consisted of 50 male and female swimmers attending a physical education high school. For this purpose, the measurement test of the inspiratory muscle strength was performed by using the measuring equipment of breathing capability, K-5, and the maximum inspiratory pressure(PI max), the inspiratory endurance, and the peak inspiratory flow(PIF) were selected as measurement variables for comparative analysis. In the group difference test, the PI max and the inspiratory endurance were significantly higher for both men and women in the superior group, and the PIF was significantly higher for female athletes but no significant difference was found in male athletes’ results. However, PIF showed a high tendency in the superior group, indicating that the superior group had better the inspiratory muscle capacity than the inferior group. The results of the analysis of the correlation between the difference of the inspiratory muscle capacity wit swimming performance level and swimming performance showed statistically significant positive correlation in both men and women at the PI max and the inspiratory endurance, and the PIF showed significant positive correlation only for women. Therefore, the study showed that the better the athlete, the better the inspiratory muscle, and the better the inspiratory muscle capacity, the better the swimming performance.
