In the past half century since the late 1960s, geosynthetics have been widely used for the reinforced earth walls, ground improvement, slope protection, sea dike and shore protection, sanitary landfill, road and airport runway, and tunnel. The Korean Peninsula has 75% of land covered by the mountain and three sides of land are facing with the sea. Therefore, the availability of land for the use of residential area as well as industrial complex are quite limited. In this regard, geosynthetics are very useful material to extend the effective use of existing land with the slight modification of ground level and also soft ground improvement. Geosynthetics are excellent construction material when they are used with proper design and construction methodology, and quality control. The first part of this paper describes about the development the reinforcement earth technology in both old days and modern times. The second part of this paper presents various ground improvement technics with utilizing geosynthetics in the land reclamation project. The latter part of this paper presents about slope protection, and sea dike as well as shore protection. Finally, geosynthetics applications in the constructions of sanitary landfill site, road and airport runways, and water proof work for tunnel construction works are described with the field case studies.
