The alignment of fiber type additives plays an important role in affecting mechanical and anisotropic properties of the composite materials. In order to simulate a molten polymer composite flow in an injection molding process, we visualized and analyzed the mix of short carbon fiber behavior and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) flowing inside the 90˚ elbow channel. This research focused on the flow visualization, tracking fibers to calculate the angle change at the perpendicular passage depending on the radius of curvature, travelling location, fiber length and the mold thickness. The experimental results were compared with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) calculation to determine the impact of shear rate components on additives rotation.
