This study is about a painting that tells the story of Zhang Han (?-?) which was made during the Joseon Period. He was the one who lived in the Jin Dynasty in China where he served as a government official in Luoyang, One fall day after resigning from his government position, he returned home and he came to miss the taste of watershield plant soup and sliced raw sea bass that he used to enjoy back in his hometown of WuJun, Jiangdong. The term, ‘Chulcheo’ in the subject refers to becoming a government official and realizing one’s ideal or biding one’s time quietly as an ordinary person. During the Joseon Period, Zhang was regarded as an example of one who’s biding his time quietly as an ordinary person during the chaotic period of Weijin.
Researchers have said that the painting, Zhang Han Chulcheodo of Joseon period, is about Zhang Han returning to his hometown of the Jiangdong area on a boat after he stepped down from his government position. This piece figuratively points to the need to quit a position of influence (portrayed as the fast river current) without hesitation if required. This study served as an opportunity to alter the interpretation of Donggang Joeodo (Painting of Fishing in Dongjiang), a painting by Kim Hong-do (1745~1806) kept at Kansong Museum. So far researchers have interpreted the piece as the one portraying Yan Gwang (39 BC ~ 41 AD) of the Late Han Dynasty of China, enjoying his fishing in the river as a hermit in Tongjiang Tongluxian, Zhejiang Province. However, this study found out that it was about Zhang Han, enjoying his fishing in Dongjiang as a hermit in his hometown of WuJun (present-day Suzhou, Jiangsu Province). Ultimately, the painting from the Joseon period, Zhang Han Chulcheodo, implies the meaning of Chulcheojiri, which means that one needs to know when to follow the path according to one’s faith and when to step down without hesitation and silently wait for the right time.
It is expected that this study will be regarded as an attempt for an in-depth analysis of the subject painting and it will help those who are interested to better understand visual images coping with politics, ideas, and social scenes from the Joseon Period.
