This study deals with comparative research on the Hebrew proverbs in the Old Testament and Korean adages. Both cultures have been beset with peculiar geopolitical settings and have struggled to survive through centuries of suffering. Hebrew proverbs are expressions of wisdom based on the fear of God. They are arranged for the daily lives of ancient Israelites in Canaan, and the ferocious battlefield between groups vying for hegemonic power. Hebrew proverbs and Korean adages are both substantially more numerous than those of other cultures in general.
Proverbs are composed of three structures. First, wisdom is expressed as the threefold union of wisdom, understanding, and knowledge. They worked together in the creation of the world. Second, they are in complementary and inseparable relationship and are routinized and personified, suggesting deification. Third, they work together in building personal lives. Threefold union is reflected in the building of human lives which is similar to the creation of the world.
Korean adages are crystals and maxims for lives in the Korean peninsula. They are short phrases, condensed forms of folk wisdom and values, which are pleasant to the ears and easy to memorize. Hebrew proverbs and Korean adages share both commonalities and differences. Issues of divine origin and folk wisdom can contribute keen insights for coping with life circumstances. It seems worthwhile to compare, systematize, and apply both Hebrew proverbs and Korean adages in the period of the COVID-19 crisis.
