Alginate-based beads have been extensively studied for the removal of various pollutants including dyes, heavy metals, and antibiotics in wastewater. However, hydrogel beads composed solely of alginate reveal several weaknesses in terms of mechanical and structural performances due to high degree of swelling and poor structural integrity.
