Exotherms appear during ice formation at subfreezing temperatures due to the release of latent heat of fusion. The exotherms can readily be detected as an abrupt increase in tissue temperature during thermal analysis, allowing to assess cold hardiness of supercooled tissues. In this study, exotherm analysis was applied to the buds and canes of ‘Campbell Early’ grapevines for evaluating their cold hardiness. Buds and 2-cm cane segments were sampled from the 3<sup>rd</sup> to 8<sup>th</sup> nodes of the grapevines at the end of January, 2020. Detached buds and 2-cm cane segments were wrapped in aluminum foil to prevent drying during cooling to -40°C with a rate of 2°C/h using a bath circulator equipped with a temperature controller. The temperatures of completely dried reference and fresh sample tissues during freezing were simultaneously monitored to calculate their temperature differentials.
