Examined in this article is the overall structure of the Nihonshoki(日本書紀)’s “Nintoku-ki(仁德紀)” chapter, and especially the 41st year entry, in order to ascertain the entry’s position inside Nihonshoki as well as its true meaning. Here, verifying the validity of the chapter’s overall contents is attempted, by comparing them to those of the Kojiki(古事記). Hopefully, analysis of all the references to the Korean peninsula (including those in the 41st year entry) would shed some light on how this entry could be used in future studies.
The “Nintoku-ki” chapter repeatedly features a series of contrived references, probably with the intention to project the image of a Holy Emperor(聖帝像). It also contains quite a few references that cannot be found in Kojiki. For example, entries for the 41st year and the 43rd year in the “Nintoku-ki” chapter contain references to the three ancient states that are nowhere to be found in Kojiki.
The 41st year entry turns out to be a portion that was newly added, in the process of creating the mythical tale for the Takakai-be [鷹甘部: hawk-hunt hereditary group]’s origin that is described in the 43rd year entry. Mid-7th century historical sources related to the Taika Reforms(大化改新) seem to have served as a motif for the modification and embellishment of the 41st year entry’s original contents. The addition was also probably meant to reflect the clan-based tales that were forwarded to authorities at the time of compiling Nihonshoki, as well as the Japanese perception of the three ancient states on the Korean peninsula as ‘vassal states(蕃國).’ Considering that, the “Nintoku-ki” chapter’s 41st year entry should only be used in studies of how Nihonshoki was compiled, or studies of the Japanese viewpoints during the 8th century.
