Purpose
Growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15), also known as Macrophage inhibitory cytokine-1 or MIC-1, is recently discovered to function as a stress inducible mitokine. Because mitochondrial stress frequently observed in cancers, we decided to investigate the role of GDF15 on tumor behavior in papillary thyroid cancer (PTC), using datasets from public repository such as The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) and also using our own validate cohort.
Method
We collected the data from TCGA THCA (n=572), GSE33630 (n=105), and GSE6004 (n=18). In addition, the serum levels of GDF15 were measured in our cohort (Severance Hospital PTC patients) (n=162). We investigated the relationship between GDF15 expressions and clinico-pathological features using these multiple datasets.
