Purpose
The prognostic significance of sarcopenia has been studied in colon cancer primarily by measuring skeletal muscle mass at the L3 level on CT images. However, it does not reflect the amount of whole body muscle. This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of sarcopenia by measuring of total abdominal muscle mass in colon cancer patients.
Method
A total of 255 colon cancer patients who underwent radical surgery from January 2013 to October 2017 at a single institution were retrospectively evaluated. We measured total abdominal muscle mass on preoperative abdomino-pelvic CT scan and determined sarcopenia from skeletal muscle index using Deepcatch program. We compared survival outcomes according to sarcopenia.
