Due to the shortage of surgical residents in most hospitals, surgeons have been performing surgery on his own or with very limited number of assistants. Most hospitals are doing this not by choice. Physician Assistants, so called PA, are filling the blanks made by lack of surgical residents. However, PA is not legally permitted by the government. Officially they are nurses and can do very limited medical procedures. Most hospitals with no surgical residents actually need PAs to do more than they are supposed to do. Recently Seoul National University Hospital made an official recognition of the term “PA” and started training programs.
Performing surgery with limited assistants can mean a few things; No assistants, low grade resident, or PA. There are advantages and disadvantages of doing surgery with a PA.
