Background/Aims
Laparoscopic surgery has been established as a standard surgical option for colorectal cancer through several randomized controlled trials. Since the concept of total mesocolic excision (TME) was introduced, TME is the gold standard surgical treatment for mid- and low rectal cancer; however, it is associated with specific technical hurdles. Obtaining the effective angle, traction, and countertraction is difficult using conventional straight-fixed laparoscopic instruments. To overcome these limitations, a surgical robot system was introduced for colorectal surgery. Robot systems have the advantages of multi-joint instruments, ergonomics, and 3-dimensional vision but are still expensive. As an alternative to robot systems, several laparoscopic articulating instruments have been introduced but are unfortunately not of practical use. In this video, we present laparoscopic LAR with TME using a new laparoscopic articulating instrument.
The aim of this article was to report the first clinical experience of using new laparoscopic articulation instru-ments in laparoscopic low anterior resection.
