Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL; Hermetia illucens) are known as an alternative feed for livestock. However, their lack in polyunsaturated fatty acid content, including that of DHA and EPA, renders them less superior compared to other types of feed. The nutritional composition of BSFL is dependent on their substrate. Squid liver oil (SLO; Todarodes pacificus) is a by- product of squid liver paste, which is priced and abundantly available, but has a high content of EPA and DHA. In this study, we evaluated the most favorable SLO concentration for the optimal growth and nutritional composition of BSFL. After 12 days of rearing, SLO-treated BSFL showed a significant increase in growth, and on day 15, treatment with 5% SLO showed the highest increase among all treatments (p < 0.05).
