Due to recent international climate change and marine environment changes caused by indiscriminate coastal development, the frequency of the appearance and mass outbreaks of jellyfish populations in coastal waters is increasing. Large numbers of moon jellyfish and Nomurai jellyfish also occur in the coastal waters of the Republic of Korea, and have led to the shutdown of power plants in coastal waters and caused stinging accidents to swimmers. In particular, there is a lack of basic data on box jellyfish Carybdea brevipedalia, which are highly toxic in the southern coastal waters. The overall box jellyfish is of a small size and looks fragile, but it is known to be highly toxic. It is a small species with a bell diameter of approximately 3 cm. Although it appears to be approximately 15 cm long when viewed with light in the water, its tentacles are more than 2 m long to facilitate hunting; this increases their chances of contact with humans. In this study, we analyzed the swimming speed and momentum of swimming behavior for individual jellyfish that appeared on the southern coast of Korea in summer 2020 using a visualization technique.
