The problems facing the socially vulnerable still occur and in some ways are more severe than they have been in the past even though the abundance of modern society can be said to be without precedence in human history. African-Americans also overcame the devastations of war after the American Revolution but despite the country’s rapid democratization and economic growth, social polarization continues to worsen. For this reason, the issue of how to solve the problems of the socially vulnerable needs to be perceived as a crucial focus.
This paper investigates how Toni Morrison portrays the socially vulnerable individuals, as well as communities, through her novels, Home and Sula. This paper also examines the two types of African-American communities that the main characters, Frank and Cee, experience in Home and Sula and Shadrack in Sula. This paper explores how the African-American community in Home plays a significant role in overcoming individual and collective traumas. The study highlights Toni Morrison’s emphasis on the role of family and the African-American community to individuals’ ways to overcome adversity and rebuild their own African-American identity.
