This paper investigates the actual state of language use and awareness in multilingual Chinese Korean students and adults in Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture, China and how their ethnic identity is changing owing to the internationalization of the community. The findings of this paper, which makes a comparison between students and working adults, are that students’ Korean language proficiency is declining as a result of increasing Sinicization, while the number of those who do not consider Korean their first language is rising. However, students still have a high level of ethnic consciousness. Thus, while an increasing number of Korean students do not have a primary awareness of Korean as an ethnic language, there is little change in ethnic consciousness. This implies that while language identity is changing significantly, this is not the case with ethnic identity. In conclusion, it is clear that the identity of Korean students is formed not only by their language ability but also by other diverse, complex factors.
