The metaverse is an experiential virtual reality and has the potential as an empty world that can create a new reality beyond the constraints of time, space and resources. Therefore, this study intends to examine the meaning of metaverse as a new paradigm beyond technical and industrial discussions. To this end, the metaverse was typified by applying the possible world theory that explores the real world and unrealized possibilities surrounding it.
In the possible world theory, the Actual World(AW), the Textual Actual World(TAW), the world embodied in the text, and the Textual Reference World(TRW) that is not included in the Textual Actual World(TAW) but can be inferred through it are distinguished. At this time, it is important how readers(users) accept the relationship between the Actual World(AW), the Textual Actual World(TAW), and the Textual Reference World(TRW). In this study, four types of metaverse were presented: standalone, frame, borderline, and substitution types, focusing on the relationship between these worlds.
First, the standalone-type metaverse is a world that has its own worldview and rules independent of the Actual World(AW), and is represented by a game-type virtual world. Users not only experience the independent Textual Actual World(TAW), but also continuously create new Textual Reference World(TRW) through emergent play.
Second, the frame-type metaverse is a form in which users" emergent play goes beyond the creation and experience of the Textual Reference World(TRW), and leads to the creation of the Textual Actual World(TAW). This includes the user creation system of <Roblox> and <Minecraft>.
Third, the borderline-type metaverse is a world where users can create and experience various Textual Actual World(TAW) based on the Actual World(AW) through everyday media authoring technology. The Textual Reference World(TRW) is created at the boundary between the Actual World(AW) and the Textual Actual World(TAW), and includes <Weverse>, a fan community platform.
Lastly, the substitution-type metaverse includes virtual exhibitions in a form in which the Textual Actual World(TAW) replaces the experiences and activities of the Actual World(AW). The Textual Reference World(TRW) is consistent with the Actual World(AW) in which users live their daily lives, or is oriented toward the Actual World(AW).
This study is a preliminary study that examines the concept and types of metaverse through possible world theory, and examines various forms of metaverse appearing in media culture in general. It is also significant in that it provided an opportunity to discuss the future potential of the metaverse.
