The rapid growth of the global economy has been coupled with negative environmental impacts from production, consumption, and disposal processes. Interestingly, this has consequently seen a growing interest in the upcycle fashion driven by increasing concern for the environment among other factors. The present study investigated the concepts and characteristics of upcycle design, analyzed a typical upcycle fashion brand RE; CODE, and developed upcycle designs as real fashion items.
First, the present study examined the concepts and characteristics of upcycle fashion. Second, it analyzed the elements, methods, and characteristics of design works by selecting representative upcycle brands. Third, upcycle designs were divided into three themes (heterogeneous mix-and-match, minimal functionality, and romantic retro) and designed 6 fashion items for women in their 20"s and 30"s. As for design process, researchers collected second-hand clothing, and selected methods that could be used to improve them, and highlighted characteristics that fit the three themes. The results of the present study provide an insight into the importance of upcycle fashion design. Based in addition, based on our findings we highlighted that upcycle fashion will be developed through higher popularization of brands to consumers, and research with upcycle brand analysis and design presentation.
