Sun Mee Chomet is a Korean-American adoptee, who wrote an autobiographical play How to be a Korean Woman, a one-woman show about her reunion with her birth family and how this affected her sense of what it means to be a Korean woman. Through her play, this paper examines the ways in which transracial adoptees experience identity problems and how they are alienated from both Korean and American society. The paper will describe transracial adoptees' experience of identity crisis in an adopted country and how it affects the formation of identity. Such processes will be analyzed through Freud, Lacan, and Fanon's theory. Moreover, such problems will be examined more in detail through Chomet's play. How her experience of alienation within her adoptive family caused an identity crisis within her mind. Her return to Korea will be also discussed in the paper. What had caused her to go back to Korea and search for her birth family, and hardships she faces even after reunion with her birth family. She faces a cultural barrier between her and her Korean family, and Chomet attempt to assimilate into the Korean culture. However, she finds thatsuch an image is not her style and begins to feel the gap between Korean culture and her Americanness. The further essay explores how she identifies her identity after all the complicated experiences she had in Korea.
