A yearly enormous volume of cigarette butts is being disposed of in the environment with certain harmful residues. Filters made of cellulose acetate (CA) account for the largest proportion of discarded cigarette butts. Although CA is a biodegradable polymer, its decomposition rate is slow, so there is a problem that harmful substances are released into the ground and water.
