This article compares the perception of modern Korean history shown in the early writings of Chong-Sik Lee(1931~) and Bruce Cumings(1943~) who are the founding fathers of Korean studies in the US academia. Their works began with an understanding of Korean nationalism in the framework of Asian Studies. Chong-Sik Lee’s work describes the historical root of the Korean communist movement combined with Korean nationalism, proving the factional nature of the Korean communist movement. It was Chong-Sik Lee’s conclusion that the North Korean regime could have been established only through Soviet sponsorship and intervention. In comparison, Cumings tried to show the status of Korean nationalism and the independent origin of the left-wing movement on the Korean people while tracing the origin of the Korean war in his doctoral thesis. Cumings’ key argument was that the U.S. military government played a ‘counterrevolutionary’ role in crushing the poplar base of Korean people’s movement. In this sense, Cumings saw the Korean war in 1950 as a result of the growing contradictions of colonial Korea through the U.S. military regime. This article suggests that contrapuntal reading offers us new understanding of studying Korean Studies that focuses on our intertwined and overlapping histories.
