The purpose of this study was to explore 1) whether the change of residential status from living-together to living-alone affects the depression of elderly women in urban and rural areas and 2) how the three types of social relationships (relationship with children, relationship with friends and neighbors, and social activities) affect the depression of elderly women at their early residential stage of living alone. Data from sixth (2016) and seventh (2018) waves of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing (KLoSA), two groups of female elderly aged 65 years or older, those who lived with someone in both 2016 and 2018 (N=1,566) and those who lived with someone in 2016 but alone in 2018 (N=133), were analyzed. Using the statistical package SPSS 25, mean comparison and multiple regression analyses were implemented. The results confirmed that the level of depression of female elderly in urban areas was affected by the change in residental status from living-together to living-alone. Interaction effect between the change in residential status (from living-with to living-alone) and the relationship with children were supported by the female elderly living in rural area, meaning that the more frequent the contact with their children, the lower the levels of depression of female elderly in rural area at their early residential stage of living alone. Based on the main results of this study, further implementable suggestions were presented.
