The purpose of this study is to analyze the survey process and result of reading ability part in “Analysis of The 2018 National Assessment of Korean Lanugage Ability”. The research tool in the reading area is designed based on the 2013 study, but the evaluation factors and texts are subdivided to reflect the changes in the literacy environment. The survey is conducted on adult men and women aged 20 to 69 years. The survey is divided into 2500 subjects in 가-type, 2500 subjects in 나-type, and 500 subjects in 통합-type. According to the survey result, the average reading ability of Koreans is measured at 3 levels. For specific grade ratings, Level 4 is 21.1%, Level 3 is 38.5%, level 2 is 33.1%, Level 1 is 7.3%. When the results were analyzed by variables, there is no significant difference by gender. The reading ability of 20s, 30s is higher than that of 60s, and the reading ability of small & medium cities is higher than that of large cities. By occupation, mental laborers’s reading ability is higher than physical laborers. By educational level, the higher the educational level, the better the reading ability. Based on the survey results, this study proposed a design for the future Korean reading ability survey through comparison with international reading ability evaluation.
