Metal titanium is processed to be used in a variety of industries. In the processing, 40∼50% of the metal titanium is spent as titanium chips and scraps. In this study, TiO2 powder was prepared using the spent titanium chips by modified sol-gel method. The spent titanium chip was dissolved in HCl solution. After filtering, NH4OH solution with various concentrations was added respectively. TiO2 powders after filtering were calcined at 200 ℃, 400 ℃, and 600 ℃, respectively. Photocatalytic property of the TiO2 powder was evaluated as decomposition rate for methylene blue(MB) using a liquid phase stirred reactor. XRD patterns for the TiO2 powders calcined at 400 ℃ and 600 ℃ indicated that the crystal structure was mixed type with rutile and anatase. BET surface area of TiO2 powders decreased with increasing calcination temperature, and was not correlated with the concentration of NH4OH solution. Photocatalytic efficiency of the prepared TiO2 powder depended highly on concentration of NH4OH solution, and was the highest when prepared with 8M-NH4OH solution. The calcination temperature was higher, the decomposition rate was lower. The TiO2 powder calcined at 200 ℃ using 8M-NH4OH solution showed the highest efficiency. The decomposition rate at decomposition time of 2hr and MB concentration of pH 8 was 97.9 %.
