This study aims to highlight the comparison between the poets John Clare and William Cowper. Cowper and Clare both suffered from depression as a result of mental illness. They also both retired into the countryside, and meditated on the problems of change and despoliation in rural areas. Clare’s poetry was greatly influenced by Cowper's attitude towards rural despoliation, and by the poetic modes he used, such as the natural or “familiar” conversational style and simplistic language, and his detailed description of landscapes. Therefore, there are many similarities between the two poets. However, there are also some differences. For example, in Cowper’s poem, “The poplar-Field”, the defiance against the felling of the poplars is a kind of a sentimental nostalgia and a universal resignation, but is also wistfully separated from the object of the original protest. In Clare’s poem “To a Fallen Elm”, the destruction of the elm leads not to resignation, but to a political voice of a more complex blend of loss and recompense. Clare sets himself against the selfishness of civilized people, as represented by the enclosure and progression of his poetry.
