The purpose of this study is to compare and contrast patterns of conversation closing strategies used by Korean native speakers and Korean language learners in face-threatening circumstances caused by the close of conversation. To this end, DCT(Discourse Completion Test) was constructed with six circumstances by considering social factors including social status(S), distance(D) and imposition(I). Then the responses of Korean (under)graduate and foreign students, which were collected through DCT were divided into the types of conversation closing strategies. The patterns of strategies used by both groups were analyzed in terms of three factors: 1) the usage frequency of conversation closing strategies by circumstances; 2) the type of strategies firstly used in the close of conversation; 3) types of the combination of strategies. The findings showed that Korean (under)graduate students tended to use different strategies, depending on social factors, while foreign ones could not. It was, therefore, found that foreign students' sensitivity to social factors was relatively low, in selecting and using conversation closing strategies. In order for Korean learners to effectively use conversation closing strategies, thus, the instruction for Korean conversation closing should focus on enhancing learners' awareness of social factors.
