This paper examines non-canonical uses of the Spanish definite article el which can appear with infinitives. Specifically, I discuss the asymmetry between subject and object infinitives with reference to the possibility of taking the definite article el, and I offer a formal analysis within the generative framework to elucidate such asymmetry. For object infinitives, I propose that the definite article el cannot appear with infinitives from the outset by claiming that it is pseudo-incorporated into the main verb which takes the infinitive as complement. On the other hand, for subject infinitives, I suggest that the syntactic position of the infinitive with the definite article el is not the same as that of the infinitive without it as far as their information-structural interpretations are concerned. In conclusion, the aforementioned asymmetry is syntactic due to the different derivations of subject and object infinitives, and the presence of the definite article el in subject infinitives is related to the structural position of the infinitive.
