I explore the motives for Noin’s selection of waka poems in Gengenshu in terms of (i) the poets selected and (ii) the types of expression used in the selected waka poems. I focus on the poets whose works were selected in the selected poem books less than five times after Shuishu. The main results are summarized as follows. There is a tendency that Noin selected poets with whom he has some personal relation. For instance, while Oe-no Yoshitoki was famous as a poet, his brothers and father were not, but their works were included in the poem book because Noin was in a close relationship with them. This tendency also holds of female poets. For example, the sister of Anpo, Katano-no onna, and Minase-no onna, were far from famous figures in the imperial culture, but their works were included in the first volume of Noin-Hoshi-Shu. This is indicative that their relationship with Noin (before he became a monk) led him to select their works. At the same time, Noin paid attention to works of the imperial family and the Fujiwara family, but he selected works by not only the figures on the highest position of the era such as Michinaga but also those who were not famous as poets but whose stories were often at the center of attention such as Koichijoin, Shijo-no Miya, Jokyoden-no Nyogo, Michitsuna, Michikane, and Takamatsutono- no ue. For those who were not famous as poets, Noin highly valued the works which make use of the traditional waka expressions as used in the pre-Noin poem books such as Manyoshu, Isemonogatari, and Kokinshu. Also, he focused on the works which reflect the new waka expressions which suited his taste. Gengenshu was subsequently highly thought of in Shunjei’s Koraihuteisho, and this seems to be because Noin’s selection of waka poems which sought novelty in the search for traditional expressions was recognized as a precursor of Honkadori, a waka technique which was established around the time when Koraihuteisho was published.
