In order for the speaker’s request to be realized through request expressions, the other party’s action must be accompanied. In other words, since request expressions can put a burden on the listener when used, communication skills that can make use of appropriate forms and strategies are required. This study contrasts the request expressions of Korean and Japanese used in the business scene. Through this, the characteristics of the two language cultures related to ‘request expressions’ will be identified. Business conversation requires clear communication so that the other party is not misled. However, use of request expressions intended to be considerate to the other party can sometimes make it difficult to clearly grasp the speaker’s intention. Therefore, the speaker uses request expressions by determining what is more important between the clear communication of request and the consideration for the listener. Since both Japanese and Korean use ‘direct type’ of request expressions more frequently, it can be said that in both languages clear communication of request is more important than the consideration for the lister. But it varies depending on the situation.
