Purpose: Shindenzukuri is one of the prototypes of Japanese residential architecture, a style of aristocratic houses of the Heian period. Its importance is emphasized in various aspects such as connection with Buddhist temples influenced by China and the imperial residence, Dairi affected by Tang Dynasty, reflection of Japanese culture that advocated breaking away from Chinese culture at the time, and relation with Shoinzukuri which is the prototype of Japanese architecture today. It reflects the social class order of the Heian period at the time, as well as the Japanese sentiment and aesthetics. It is very meaningful to explore the roots of today"s Japanese residential architecture through the study of Shindenzukuri and analysis on its origins and characteristics. Method: In order to understand the status and importance of Shindenzukuri in architectural history, the flow of academic evaluation and related research in Japanese architectural history was examined. In order to examine the origin, establishment, and development process of Shindenzukuri, the characteristics of noble houses in the Nara period were examined. The research includes the study of remains of the 10th century and before that were excavated from Hean-kyo and Genji Monogatari(1008) to show lifestyles and dwellings of that time and the influences from Chinese palace, Tang dynasty"s residence, Sahapwon, Buddhist Temple, and Dairi within the Japanese imperial palace are complexly represented. Result: Shindenzukuri is symmetric overall referring to Chinese palace and the residence, Sahapwon. The similarities to Dairi and temples influenced by China are shown in aspects of three row arrangement with centering Jeonjeon and spatial structure of main room and Hishasi. The difference from Chinese palaces, shrines, temples, and aristocratic houses in the Nara period is open space in Shindenzukuri. Shindenzukuri shows the addition of Japanese own culture and tradition to Chinese influence.
