The 1930s in Japan was commonly called the era of “ero, guro, nansensu (erotic, grotesque, nonsense).” In such a tendency of the time, women just existed as objects objectified by men. In the era of “ero, guro, nansensu”, however, women as the subjects of expression also existed, and the typical examples of such women were female writers. In this paper, I focused on the female writers existed as subjects of expression in the culture of objectifying women and tried to reveal a new aspect surrounding the women in the 1930s. This paper can be divided into two parts. In the first part, I studied the perception of the women as objects represented in the Modern culture in the 1930s. And in the process I figured out that women had not only been objectified by men but also been evaluated by women, and that women’s evaluation of women had been closely related with “Romantic Ideology”. In the second part, I studied how the female writers representing the women as subjects had been perceived and consumed, and then analyzed the self-expression as a woman represented in their works. As a result, I figured out the women in the 1930s had been perceived and expressed as the objects of “ero”, desire derived from the Modern culture but standardized themselves by “Romantic Ideology”, their own hidden desire.
