Located in the mild subtropical region of East Asia, Okinawa is well known for its unique culture and a long history as <Ryukyu>. Neighboring Fuzen serving as its foothold for cultural exchanges with China, the influx of Chinese culture culminated in unique Ryukyu culture. Being in-between two powers, China and Satsuma, Ryukyu’s survival depended on delicate diplomacy. But in 1609, Satsuma occupied Ryukyu, then in 1872, Ryukyu Kingdom was brought to an end by Ryukyu Syobun (1872) enforced by the Japanese central government. And in 1879, this Kingdom was completely integrated under the rule of Japan by the Hihanchiken of the Meizi government. With the modernization of Okinawa by the Japanese government, the native people adopted the Japanese language as their own against their mother tongues, Ryukyuan languages. Okinawan languages go back more than one thousand years through different routes from Japanese. So it must have been an agonizing experience for them to lose their indigenous identity. Under the rule of the Emperor system, which can be described by National Prosperity and Military power, and Kokutai, the Pacific War must have been a tragedy for Okinawan people. And the emperor at the top of everything is expressed as a hatred in the Okinawan literature. Do you really think there is Buddhist Literature on that land? Medoruma Shun documented the painful experiences that Okinawan people endured in his literature. Therefore, the nature and expression of the anger of Medoruma Shun toward Japan and the Japanese imperial family have been examined from a historical perspective.
