Objective: To determine the influence of chewing gum containing immunoglobulin Y (IgY), on the periodontium. Methods: Sixty-two adult volunteers were divided into 2 groups: the experimental group and the control group. The clinical experiment was performed by supplying chewing gum containing IgY to the experimental group and chewing gum without IgY to the control group. For the control group, oral examinations to assess placebo effect were completed at weeks 1, 2, and 4 for the following items as community periodontal index, papillary, marginal, and attached gingival index (PMA), patient hygiene performance and oral malodor, with each standardization. Results: Critical periodontal index was decreased in the experimental group, but no difference was observed in the control group 4 weeks later. PMA was measured to evaluate inflammatory state at the upper and lower anterior teeth; PMA was lower in the experimental group than in the control group after 4 weeks of chewing gum containing IgY (p＜0.01). Oral malodor decreased remarkably in the experimental group after 4 weeks relative to the control group. Conclusion: In general, it is suggested that the use of chewing gum containing IgY may be an effective way to control early stages of gingivitis because of the evidence for decreased PMA index and oral malodor in clinical tests. It was recommend to use IgY containing chewing gum as an adjunctive tool to maintain oral health.
