This study estimates the induced effect of hosting a new nuclear power plant (NPP) on the local economy separately for the construction and operation phases. Generally, higher economic-induced effects were achieved from operational activities rather than from construction-related ones, although itemized differences might exist. An analysis of construction-related economic effects revealed that the production- and employment-induced coefficients were 1.27 and 2.08, respectively. Among the overall effects including the secondary-induced effects, the coefficients for induced production and compensation of employees were 1.61 and 0.47, respectively. The analysis of operation-related effects for exclusive sales in the Gyeongbuk region revealed that the production- and employment-induced coefficients were 1.71 and 2.50, respectively. Furthermore, the extraction of indirect effects including secondary ones showed the production and compensation of employee coefficients were 2.00 and 0.38, respectively. Although the overall induced coefficients were higher in the operational phase, the scale of induced effects was larger during construction given that the construction costs were twice the sales volume in the operation phase. However, given that the average NPP operation period is much longer than the construction one, we could not assert the induced effect of the construction phase is always larger than that of the operation one.
