In French history, Algerian War has been “a lingering past” and “a wound forbidden to disclose”. Even now, after 50 years since the Evian Agreement that brought the war to an end, Algerian War and especially the battle of Algiers that had split french society still remain a sensitive issue and an uncomfortable past to be mentioned. However, it seems to be necessary to consider it as an object of history not with ‘passionate enthusiasm’ but with ‘calm reason’ now. This paper aims to present the battle of Algiers which revealed a new bare face featuring ‘terror’ and ‘torture’. Especially it focuses on the fact that despite of its military victory, this battle brought about spiritual and political crisis in french society, eventually causing the defeat of the Algerian War. The act of torture to Algerian by French troops split France, caused fundamental problems on ‘Algérie française’ and played a major role in France changing its position to making Algeria independent. In that sense, as the ‘battle of Dien Bien Phu’ in may, 1954 put an end to colonial history in Indochina with defeat of France, so the battel of Algiers can be recorded as a critical incident to finish 132-year-colonial history in Algeria. It shows that, although France made a glorious victory in military aspects, its spiritual and political split and defeat signaled the collapse of the French Republic.
