Yoon, Hang-Jin. 2015. Clausal Gerunds Revisited. The Journal of Studies in Language 31.1, 95-111. The syntactic status and Case assignment mechanism of clausal gerunds have been a controversial issue since the birth of the generative grammar. One of the puzzles is that the PRO-ing gerund is allowed to locate in the extraposition whereas the ACC-ing gerund is not. This study is designed to seek for an answer to the puzzle and to explore the causes for certain differences between two gerundive constructions. An analysis is first explored that the ACC-ing may not occur in the extraposition because expletive it is not compatible with the null complementizer. Case feature is assumed in the null complementizer and it prevents expletive it from being generated in the SPEC of CP. It is also argued that this assumption that there is a null complementizer in the ACC-ing gerund can explain other syntactic phenomena. The incompatibility of temporal prepositions with the ACC-ing construction can be ascribed to the same reason: namely, the null complementizer may not be able to assign Case to the subject due to the presence of a temporal operator in the ACC-ing. It is also claimed from the analysis that the syntactic status of the ACC-ing as well as the PRO-ing is CP and that Case is assigned to the overt subject of the ACC-ing gerund by the outer term via the null complementizer of the ACC-ing gerund.
