The rural-house standard design is designed for economic and qualitative betterment of housing in agricultural and fishing villages by inducing frame standardization and modularization and pursuing standardization of construction. However, the current standardized housing in rural and fishing villages is not being used actively because there is no fixed design standard. Therefore, this study intended to provide practical basic design data that can be used as a helpful reference in preparing the design standard of standardized rural housing through characteristic research on the unit plan characteristics of the rural-house design standard that came into wide use in South Korea since 1995. To do so, Firstly this study categorized 79 housing units into 10 types, and investigated the characteristics of floor planning by calculating average, smallest, and largest total floor area by type. Secondly, this study calculated the area of living room, kitchen, master bedroom, bedroom, entrance, bathroom, utility room, and boiler room by type and the side measurement data of long and short sides. The smallest, largest, average, and mode values of calculated data found, and these measurements, area distribution, and floor planning characteristics were identified. Also, this study verified the propriety by comparing the housing standard in Korea and Japan. This study prepared a framework of basic design data for setting the design criteria of rational standard housing in rural and fishing villages.
