This research examines what effect English-speaking Korean language beginners' perception of social distance has on their Korean language achievement. For the objective, Acton's PDAQ(Professed Difference in Attitude Questionnaire) was used as a survey tool to investigate students' perception of social distance, and 93 responses were analyzed with multiple regression analysis. As a result, among the three social distance factors, S-C(distance between self and countrymen) was found to significantly affect students' Korean language achievement. Specifically, students with the perception of further S-C distance showed higher Korean language achievement. However, S-K(distance between self and Koreans) and C-K(distance between countrymen and Koreans) were not found to be an influential variable on students' Korean language achievement. The results of this study could provide a theoretical background for foreign language teachers to predict students' language achievement based on students' perception of social distance and to design effective foreign language learning environments.
