‘Architect of naked architecture’ Tadao Ando, who adopts nature to architecture and creates beautiful architecturalspaces with exposed concrete, was born in Osaka, Japan in 1941 and became spotlighted from all over the world as aself-taught architect without having formal training in the field. After exploring famous buildings around the world, includingJapan from 1962 through 1968, he founded his architectural firm in 1969 and has designed essential and practical architecture. He is one of the representative architects of the third generation, who was awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize, which iscalled the Nobel Prize in Architecture in 1995 with architecture in communion with nature, like Naoshima Contemporary ArtMuseum (1988, 1992 and 1995). Especially, Tadao Ando was recognized as one of the world’s famous architects because hehas worked on a creative task, combining the concepts of the traditional Japanese architecture with the styles of Westernmodernist architecture, so that the natural environment and regional characteristics could melt in his architecture. Therefore, hisarchitecture is very similar to minimalism in the Western countries, but in fact, it is a work starting from the tradition of Orientalart, which directly inherited, in particular, the traditional Japanese architecture, and even if it starts from the past traditions andculture, it is a work of creation not simple restoration or reproduction. In addition, as for his architectural language, water, wind, light, sound and nature are introduced inside the buildings, and in particular, ‘water’ is one of the important elements of naturecontained in his architecture. Also, he regards exposed concrete as the material which best expresses the traditional Japanesearchitecture, regarding it as a material suitable for the creation of beautiful architectural spaces along with nature, to the extentthat he can be called ‘an architect of naked architecture’ who reveals the material itself. Thus, this study has a purpose andsignificance that it looks into the characteristics of Tadao Ando’s construction of architectural spaces of museums with acomprehensive analysis of his representative examples of museums. Hopefully, it will be a useful, informative material necessaryfor the design of museum architecture of a new concept.
