Thiswork investigates if non-native Chinese and Korean listenersagree with natives in the evaluation of foreign accent forChinese talkers’ English L2 speech, but unlike many previousstudies, speech rate was manipulated to expand and compress inEnglish statement and yes-no question stimuli. Results showedthat Chinese listeners’ ratings were significantly similar withthose of native listeners in the assessment of English statementstimuli regardless of the listeners’ L2 proficiency. Koreanlisteners did not, however, show such a pattern. When judgingyes-no question stimuli, Chinese listeners statistically agreedwith natives, yet high listeners only for Chinese high talkersand low listeners only for Chinese low talkers. Korean listenersdid not, on the other hand, show a significant agreement withnatives. This was interpreted as stating that the interlanguageshared by the same L1 talkers and listeners might facilitatespeech comprehension and ultimately enable the listeners to besensible enough to the temporal changes of stimuli. Concerningnon-native listeners’ L1 background and L2 proficiency, thePearson correlation analysis showed that non-natives’ L1 background, rather than L2 proficiency, contributed to inducingsimilar foreign accent ratings to native listeners. However, L2proficiency seemed to play a role in a particular sentence typewhere the sound features were closely associated withproficiency in the interlanguage shared by the same L1non-natives.
