In the Qur’an, there are lots of statements mentioning Christians. Some are very positive and recognize Christians’ status as a respectable religious sect. However, by contrast, there are very criticizing verses of Christians. These strange statements in the Qur’an raise some questions: Why does the Qur’an speak about Christians in a confusing way? Who are the Christians the Prophet Muhammad encountered? What kind of beliefs did they have? In the Arabian Peninsula, there were already some Christians before establishing Islam. They were known as Nasara or people of the Book (including Jewish) to Arabs. Under the severe splits and debates between Byzantine and Constantinople, there were many heretic sects spread in those areas—Monophysites, Nestorians and Ebionites. During Muhammad’s life time, he could encounter Christians and Jews. However, these encounters could not lead him to Christianity or Judaism. Rather, through these encounters, Muhammad had developed Islamic beliefs. At the beginning, Muhammad wanted to be recognized as the last Prophet by both Jewish and Christian sects. However, their rejections and political circumstances he faced made him against both of them. Therefore, general evaluation on Christians by Muhammad had changed and became negative. Most of his praises and criticisms about Christians are dependent on Christians’ acceptance to Muhammad’s message of revelation of Allah and his authority as the last Prophet and on Muhammad’s understanding of Christian beliefs.
