The paper aims to introduce "Educational Theatre" in Korea and its essential characteristics for a comprehensive understanding in regards to its conceptual definition and the multiplicity of its sub-categories. Emphasizing 'student-centered' and 'process-oriented' approaches at its heart, Educational Theatre has thrived on its creative and effective power of making learning experiences interesting, active, and reflective. Among Educational Theatre's various sub-genres, T.I.E. or Theatre in Education is the main subject in this paper for its possibility of providing a powerful learning impact by combining theatrical and educational experience altogether. First developed in U.K., TIE has endured dramatic ups and downs throughout its 40-year history. At one point it became an extremely influential social phenomenon, and of late, its influence has greatly reduced due to a various financial, social, and political reasons. The paper presents the overview of TIE history along with its changes over the years, and then analyzes the fundamental traits of this complex and versatile work that incorporates theatre, education, social issues, and community via active interaction between the performers and the participants. A variety of British and American TIE programs are examined to understand TIE's broad range of thematic repertoires as well as its flexibility of utilizing varied forms depending on needs. The paper concludes with the emphasis on building community as the grass-root foundation for a successful settlement and development of TIE in Korea. With unlimited possibilities, TIE is a revolutionary bottom-up approach that could bring about a whole new way of learning, experiencing, and changing the world through theatre and active participation.
