The purpose of this study is to analyse the size and characteristics of youth poverty in Korea, using the Household Income and Expenditure Survey data. Findings and implications of this study are as follows. First, poverty of early youth, aged 18-24, is higher than child poverty and shows ‘a sudden jump’ compared to other age groups. time serial trend of youth poverty during the last ten years, from year 1998 to year 2008, shows that the poverty of 18-24 age youth group is increasing, reflecting the extension of educational period and the deterioration of youth labour market. Second, Korean youth poverty share both characteristics of child poverty and working poor. 60% of poor youth are the children of poor parents, showing that the formation of the independent household is difficult and Korean youth are dependent on their parents for a long time. In case of poor youth householders, both the employment rate and mean income from the employment is low, showing the working poor aspects of the youth poverty. Considering the complexity of youth poverty, this study suggests a wholistic approach (including family types, household status and life course) to analyse the economic difficulties of youth beyond youth unemployment.
