The purpose of the study is to investigate the effects of collocation-based vocabulary instruction on high school students' writing abilities. To fulfill the purpose, two research questions were postulated: 1) Does collocation-based vocabulary instruction have an effect on the improvement of students' vocabulary knowledge?; and 2) is there any relationship between students' collocation knowledge and writing abilities? In order to answer the questions, collocation and writing tests were administered before and after a 7-week-experiment session to 80 high school students. The 40 students in the experimental group were given collocation-based vocabulary instruction with a variety of collocation activities. By comparing pre- and post-test scores, the following conclusion was drawn: Collocation-based vocabulary instruction had a positive effect on the improvement of the students' writing abilities as well as vocabulary knowledge. This finding indicates the importance of collocation-based vocabulary instruction in teaching vocabulary and writing in EFL contexts. (Chungnam National University)
