The purpose of this study is to delve into the world of Ham Sok Hon,how he perceived the so called ‘religion’. First of all I can mention that Ham is positive of the idea of homo religiosus, which means that religion is not something to be chosen or to be judged. It is quite natural that there is anti-religious group, however, Ham believes that basically human beings can not deny the innate nature of homo religiosus.
Ham sees human evolves, and religion can be one of the phenomenal instrument that asks, pursues, and accomplishes our meaning of life, and in the course of that, those who have reached certain stage of self transcendence, would inevitably and eventually come to a questions of ‘meaning’ in life. One can not deny the meaning of life as there is always meaning in everything. In the case of Ham, he sees God, Meaning, Oneness, Religion are all inter-replaceable, or mutually transferable one way or another.
He understands that the ultimate reality transcendent the epidemiological subject and object. One who Seeks would communicate with the Ultimate, and the Mystery also simultaneously response as a Transcendent and Immanent. Ham, conceives the ultimate reality as the eternally unaccomplished, and the generator of all new creation.
To Ham, no matter how the great tradition the historical religion contains,it is all past experience and stories who had encountered the Ultimate, which itself is spirit and the truth. Therefore, to Ham, dogma, ritual, theory, and symbols of religion are all empty products that emerged in its historical development. He sees that religion can be something dynamic when one’s self-denial is there, which serves to play a role of mediation for it is to reveal the truth itself. And to him, ultimately religion is one in its salvation pursuit acknowledging the fact that religion diversified in the different soil and culture.
Ham’s religious spirit penetrates the East Asian tradition and Hebraism, that served to form self-grown Ssi-al spirit. He admits the intermingled spirit of all the Confucian, Buddhist and Taoist, nevertheless, he is a strong believer of the creative evolution that is highly future focused. To Ham, the Ultimate is the universal principle and mind, keeping the position of inducer and catalyzer that eventually calls for ‘One Body’. The role of religion is required even in this 21th century for the possible global life, and most of all, simply because it carries the religious enlightenment emphasizing mutual existence for both individual and all.
