This study was designed to ascertain how idiomatic expressions are treated in high school English textbooks. For this purpose, this study analyzed which kinds of idiomatic expressions were presented in the four high school English textbooks and how they were realized in learning activities. The results of the study were as follows: (1) idiomatic expressions were presented at the bottom of the readings in all four textbooks and literal translation was provided in three textbooks; (2) while the majority of the idiomatic expressions were phrasal verbs, few were those that imply distinct cultural clues to understand their meanings (e.g., proverbs and metaphorical expressions); (3) several activities related to vocabulary were found in all four textbooks, whereas none of them were designed solely for practising idiomatic expressions. According to the results, it seems quite difficult to generalize that learners can have sufficient knowledge of idiomatic expressions from the textbooks. Some suggestions are forwarded which may result in the improvement of learners' knowledge of idiomatic expressions.
