On the basis of the overview of the recent functional linguistic and conversation-analytic approaches to discourse, this paper attempts to integrate the principles of communication into speaking instruction syllabus based on communicative language teaching approaches. With special reference to a recent functional linguistic stance, various aspects of functionally and interactionally oriented approaches are examined in which grammar is analyzed as emergent resources procedurally deployed in specific contexts of human communication and interaction. Drawing upon the conversation-analytic perspective, a proposal is made regarding ways to explicate various 'grammars' as relevant to and reflective of the ways in which the structure of language is adapted to and shape turn-taking and sequential structures. This approach may not only be applicable to classroom instruction but also provide a general framework in devising textbooks for enhancement of speaking skills for the learners of Korean as a foreign language.
